In electrical terms, a "spur" is an extension from a ring main circuit. A fused connection unit (FCU), often referred to as a spur, is used to provide a fused outlet for a fixed appliance. An unswitched spur is typically used for appliances that do not require a local on/off control such as extractor fans, boiler controls, or integrated kitchen appliances—where the fuse provides the necessary protection, but the sleek, flat plate remains undisturbed by a physical switch.
